Final Fifty Ride Report - Dec. 31, 2011

We had record 265+ riders participate in the Final Fifty Ride from Furman

University Sat. Dec. 31st 2011. The weather was near perfect with temps reaching 63 degrees with clear blue skies. Below are a few images...

David Enter - Furman Security. These folks make hosting a ride like this so much easier!

We are sorry about the faded or non-existent course arrows. The Spinners decided many years back to use environmentally friendly chalk based marking paint so any signs of our rides are gone in a couple of weeks.   Steve and I set out to mark the course Friday and half way through we had a drizzle then a steady rain (not in forecast). What we had marked was running off the road and we had to call it quits.

Join us in Cleveland Park (near the zoo entrance) for an ongoing Sunday afternoon Swamp Rabbit trail ride. We leave the park at 2:00 PM and ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail up to Travelers Rest to the new Trailside Creamery Ice Cream Shop. The shop also serves piping hot chocolate when it's cold out. If they shut down this winter we will move to the Leapard Forest Coffee Shop. Travelers Rest is our turnaround, then we pedal back to the park. It is about 12 miles to the Creamery and 12 miles back. This is a fun ride where speed is not a factor. You simply ride at your own pace. This is an all inclusive ride - everyone is welcome! Helmets and a signed waiver are required.

Ken Drescher, co-director of Touring, presents the Safety Foundation,

represented by Sally Nicholson, a check for $900 at the Dec. 4th holiday party.

The funds were donated by cyclists who participated in the Nov. 12th Leaf Tour ride.

The Safety Foundation provides helmets and safety education to students at

local elementary schools. They also support state-wide bicycling safety activities.

SCTAC (formerly Donaldson) Tuesdays Starting March 22, 2011

There is no other ride like SCTAC. You arrive a stranger but leave a friend. Cycling brings folks together and SCTAC is where they all meet. The ride meets weekly from Spring through Fall, groups start to depart at 6pm. Times do change as the days get shorter. Spinners members receive all the e-mail updates for the ride. Due to the size of our groups and the need to maintain our average group speeds, we are adding a new group. We have many that want to graduate from the "C4" to "C3" group but are finding the transition difficult. We hope that this new group structure will help the transition.

It is important that you respect the group average speeds advertised for the group that you join. If you have the "need for speed" join the next fastest group the following week but again, do not push your group to go faster!! The ride leader sets the pace for the group, please follow the leader.

We do need "C" ride leaders/sweeper for every week, PLEASE consider volunteering!!

Ride leaders set the pace, assimilate new cyclists to the SCTAC experience, and assure the rules of the road are conveyed to all in the group. We want to ensure all feel welcome and included in our activities. We are seeing new folks weekly and having a primary contact within the groups has helped to ease their transition from a "Newbie" to a "Regular".

Please volunteer to be a ride leader at SCTAC Tuesday nights. You make this ride a success.
